West Coast Global Warming 2024 Forcast

It’s predicted that a heat dome is going to encompass the western side of the U.S and Canada mid-week. As it’s there the weather will be spiking above normal temperatures for possibly up to two weeks. This isn’t a normal heatwave, it’s being predicted that temperatures could be more than 110 degrees making the area impossible to live in without AC.

This coming Wednesday is when the 1st 100-degree day for California is bound to happen. This isn’t the first heat dome to take place during the 2020s. In 2021 one covered the Pacific Northwest for almost 4 weeks. During that time hundreds died, the environment was devastated, and infrastructure was damaged due to the constant heat. This dome helped the 2021 fire season be worse than normal, and this same event can happen this summer.

California has experienced two “wet winters” in a row which might lessen the chance of wildfires at this point but come June the vegetation could dry faster leaving things more susceptible to wildfires. The areas where snow melts are likely to be affected, which would in turn affect the height and temperature of rivers.

Global warming showed its ugly head in Arizona last year with a 31-day streak of 110 degrees or higher temperature. Once in Death Valley the temperature hit 128 degrees. These heat waves aren't just happening on the West Coast, but in Florida temperatures have hit 97 degrees in places. In Mexica there are extreme droughts happening as well, and there are warnings that the water supply there is low.

Mosquitos in California Carrying West Niles Virus

Found in the San Fernando Valley, mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been captured. People of the area should take notice and protect themselves, using bug spray and not having standing water around your homes where they like to reproduce. The virus gets into humans by the bug after it takes the virus from infected birds. In serious cases the virus can affect the brain and spinal cord of humans, where people 60 or older are more susceptible.

The amount of rainfall in California has increased the population, which can add to standing water on grounds or excess water in swimming pools. Last year there was 461 cases in California and 19 people died. Between 2013 and 2023 the West Nile carrying mosquitoes went up by 78%.

Hollywood writers 1 year after the strike

After the strike last year, writers are having difficulties finding work due to contracts that destabilized production of shows and movies. It has all shaken employment as a whole for the industry. Production has dropped 20.5% in relation to the 5-year average, and typical production for film and tv is down 7% in the 1st quarter this year.

Before the strike even began, job opportunities for writers were low as streaming services took over. AI was the next step in what led to the strike in the first place. Streaming services were spending a lot when they were butting heads trying to outpace each other, putting out content constantly. That’s essentially over now, studies have slowed down production drastically and are readjusting on how to proceed.

Production companies are in a holding pattern when it comes to what's next. Factos such as the cost of making something, advertising revenue, and tax cuts in California are encouraging executives to sit back and wait. Shows that focus on minorities such as Native American’s have taken a huge blow as a documentary here and there or a revisionist version of a west don’t get green-lit as much.

Back when streaming was new being a writer at the time gave you plenty of opportunities, even if you were new to the business. Over time the pay decreased, and production companies would pit writers against each other in hopes of getting the best idea made. Now a focus is known IPs and tying a big name to it to attract viewers.

Massive mergers have played a part in the current landscape as well. Disney bough 21st Century Fox and Warner Bros. Bought Discovery. These mergers affect the screenwriters as scripts for major projects are written but production is canned due to the business deals.

In 2022 Netflix released a report that they lost 200,000 subscribers, shocking everyone in the business. Before these writers were empowered by their original screenplays as COVID-19 took its toll on theatrical releases. Big name writers now fight over smaller and smaller streaming deals.

The deal made for the WGA last September did help raise pay for writers, put in AI protections in terms of its use, and make requirements for how many people should be working on a project so people are not overworked. These things have helped but 2024 is still tough for everyone as people wait to see things improve in 2025.
